Everyone on our allotment site has started to have issues with thier rhubarb.  The plants (many very well established) have hollow stakes and with the recent bad weather have slpit and started to die back.  What could be going on?  Is there a virus about or is it because to the strange weather we have been having?

Anyone got any ideas?

could it be that they are too well established and need the crowns splitting?

I've also had probems this year and have heard of 4 others whose rhubarb has just died on them.

I posted a week or so back with a pici of a rotten crown - I think from the replies I got andclose examination of the crown it was honey fungus, but I definitely didn't have any orange mushrooms growing round the crown- just a bright orange colour to the edge of the crown, yellower in the middle, a clear gunk round the outside edge and the fact that it broke in two very easily.

No hope for it. Thankfully I grow in containers so its contained.... I hope
