Onions & Garlic
« on: June 07, 2009, 23:32 »
Picked some of my Jap Onions and Garlic that I planted last October 2008.
Still left some in.
Really chuffed as I have never grown Onions or Garlic before.
So my question is, now I have a tray of mixed goodies, how do I preserve them all.

Do I top and bottom the roots off and freeze or ???

As usual thanks for all your help.
Thanks

The bulbed onions and garlic need to dry out fully. Put them singly on some newspaper in a dry sheltered area and let them dry for a few weeks. The tops need to be brown and crispy as will the skins (exactly how you buy them in the shops). After that, you can either trim the tops right off or braid them to hang, your choice. The bottom roots can be sheared off and tossed. Don't peel off the dried skins.
Store or hang in a well ventilated dry place and they'll keep for some time. If you have any onions that are thick-necked, use them first as they won't store as long.

I can only go on the piccie, Gary, but personally I'd use up what you have before harvesting any more as they still look quite green and not yet fully mature.

There are no problems in harvesting to use, but they may not store well if immature and the garlic may not have fully formed into cloves yet.

Onions will naturally flop over when they are mature and garlic needs to be left until the leaves are yellow.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

hi gaz, make sure you bend youre garlic over at the neck, cos if you store it without doing this it will try to run to seed and take all the goodness out of the bulb.it happend to me last year the first time i grew it.
