Brassica building?
« on: June 03, 2009, 14:37 »
You know those wooden structures on an allotment, which are covered by debris netting are they primarily for Brassica's? If so, I guess they need to be portable to some extent so they can be moved for crop rotation?

Yes they are for brassicas in the main but make great shelter for all veg. we have fix some tube into the ground and slid the poly pipe over the tube and netting over the top with large stones to hold down the netting seems to be working so far.
Thanks

Its not quite the tubing variety, its a wooden structure and big enough to walk in, almost like a greenhouse but with debris netting. Just seems like an awful lot of work when piping bent over the row would be quicker, easier and cheaper.

Some of the structures you've seen could be fruit cages - they're going to be permanent (as the plants don't move!) and often need to be reasonably tall (depending on the plants), so some people make them big enough that they can get inside and pick the fruit without removing the netting.
