How to make polytunnel cloches?
« on: May 03, 2009, 20:08 »
Have had a look at Geoff Smith's DIY polytunnels - but they are for raised beds.
Has anyone made some for going straight into the soil?  Have just bought a couple from Ebay and they do not have any ends, the polythene is thin.  So where do I buy the hoops, the plastic ,and looking at the ones I've got the slots for the hoops seem to to heat pressed - would a glue gun do a similar thing?

Realy keen to have a go at DIY for these

I use water pipe cut into suitable lengths to span my 4' wide beds. You just ram the pipe onto short bits of bamboo and then put whatever you like over - enviromesh, plastic, debris netting etc.
You can buy small cloches about 4' long in 99p shops. They work quite well, but you need to block the ends off.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Thanks Noshed -
Ill have at look in the cheap shops for these.  Not sure how long the ones Ive bought will last - the plastic looks pretty thin, but will be useful for heating up the soil next year.   Not many cheap shops near me,  and have to make special journey (time I would rather spend on the plot)  that's why I bought from Ebay - so maybe paid over the odds - oh you live and learn.
Ive ordered debris netting - coming next week, so will be able to make something more substantial and to the lengths I want too

The poundland ones are tougher than they look - I've got some on their second year, stayed out on the plot all winter and are as good as new (well, a little dirty but you can't have it all!)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

they do not have any ends, .

You just tie the end up like an Christmas cracker and tie to a peg/cane in the ground. :)

Can't actually do that with the poundland ones as there's a metal hoop right at each end, but a good suggestion for my other cloches, ta

Jewsons do 25mm MDPE blue water pipe at £15 for 25 metres, which is the stuff Geoff Hamilton used. Makes 12 large hoops. eBay is double that if you add postage. They also sell pipe clips to hold the cover on.

Couldn't find any of these cloches in Poundland. Anyone know where else I can get them at this price?

All the plastic pipe you could want.. Black will last longer as it is UV stabilised.

I have plenty of offcuts of waterpipe if anyone needs any in East Sussex.
I would post them, but it's probably not worth it.
