I am petrified of thinning my carrots for fear of the dreaded root fly. Does anyone know if it's a good idea to do it in a high wind - maybe they can't fly when it's blowing.........!

Well that's a good theory, as they are kind of fat, lazy flies  I like it 

As the flies are attracted by the smell of the leaves, and this is increased when you sqaush them, some people recommend cutting off the unwanted seedlings at ground level. Me, I water them well, pull up unwated skinnies and aken them away with me so that there is no lingering smell.
Of course you could always put debris netting over them as lots of people recommend, and then they'd be safe  or a high barrier

Thinning on a windy day is supposed to be a good time. Water afterwards to wash away the smell and take all the thinnings away including tops.
