Is it cocci?
« on: May 24, 2009, 20:52 »
I've got a polish chicken which has over the last few days has seemingly deteriorated with regards to its ability to walk. She has been very unsteady on her legs and has been balancing using her wings (hunched up). Today she has spent most of the day laid down with the odd walk every so often.
A guy at the lottie said he thought it may be coccidiosis. I've bought some medication to try her on. Any other ideas?

Thanks for any help

And what feed is she on Steve?  Most layer feeds already have an anti coccidiosis in the feed, like Farmgate do.  so you shouldn't use anything else, or it could negate the effects.  But she shouldn't have cocci if the feed does have acs in it.

Sorry I'm not much help otherwise as none of my chickens (touch wood!) have ever had things like that!

I found one of my cream legbar pullets dead this morning,( devistated) just started to give them coxoid yesterday, only noticed that the poo from one did not look right.
looking at the poo pics it looked like cocci,  I will have to keep an eye on them just in case .

medicated feed helps prevent cocci, it doesn't actually prevent it, my polands were fed on farmgate medicated chick crumb and they still got coccidiosis, read Will the vets thread, it explains it in more detail there.

Hiya guys,

Thanks for the replies. The four youngsters are about 11 weeks and currently witching from crumbs to growers. Unfortunately this morning she just seemed really weak and couldn't lift her head, it seemed more humain to put her out of her misery. The other 3 seem fine but i am giving them coxoid anyway to be sure.

thanks
