Stitches out......PANIC
« on: May 24, 2009, 15:00 »
Hello,
Took Violets stitches out this am, got all of it out they seemed a bit tight. Anyway, there is still a small break and it was dry but looked 'mouldy' no ooze. Sprayed it with purple spray, and hope it will scab over......thought i could see into the crop still. Panicking now. Have some glue but don't want to glue it up if its infected. Should i give her anti biotics?

If it's not oozing I would just leave it as it is and see how things go. I'm assuming she is eating and drinking and none of it is leaking out through the wound?
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Hi, our girl Barbara is recovering from the same thing and it does look pretty alarming while it's healing. I've made her a bib from an old t-shirt, the vest straps are cut and then tied around her neck and then tapers out to a triangle shape then you tie the pointy ends together behind her wings. This helps keep it clean and dry it also stops them pecking it themselves or anyone else having a go. My mate has recommended Dermasol to help with the healing - it's an animal cream that gently sloughs of the dead skin. Nic.

Thanks Nic. She seems Ok. Tried the beak ring today and she went mad. She has been quite good and it seems clean round it. In my panic when we did it i didn't remove any feathers so it seems fairly well protected. I have an old baby t shirt she can wear although they were hot hot hot today! Will try and get some Dermasol xx

You may find that she stops feather pecking now as Barbara has. She was getting her nutrients from feathers as her crop was so impacted. It's the second time for her and this time it hadn't got so bad as for her to start on the feathers again. I had a feeling it was dietary rather than boredom as they have a lovely big run with lots of perches, tables and a slide. They get all the leftover greens from the allotment blokes so have a lot! Good luck with her, it's so frustrating isn't it? Nic.

She started  on feathers when we introduced Dora and Cookie, they have loads of greens used to get them from the  leftovers from the greengrocer. Also have a big run with branches and dust bath. Did think that it was habit.  Hope she stops now, she seems more chilled, maybe it scared her. Very frustrating and worries me to death!! Love that blooming hen! Ohhhhh dear! The kids have been warned not to touch her feed her or  look at her!!!!!
