Pea question
« on: May 25, 2009, 21:52 »
Hi
We grew peas last year and got about 6, this year the plants are doing well but are they se than 6 this year, supposed to grow high like runner beans? As ours are healthy but fairly 'short' and are now flowering! Would be nice to get more than 6, so should i be doing something else?
Thanks

What variety are they?

Peas can grow anything from two feet to six feet depending on the variety.

How many did to sow?

You need about 15 plants for each foot of row.

One foot should produce about a pound of peas. (If you're lucky!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

i'll check the variety tomorrow, too dark outside now! we planted prob about 2 lots of 12-15 and are training them up canes, but they are bushy as apposed to tall. have some more seedings to go in they are a bit behind and there must be at least 60 seedlings there. Thanks for the replies so far

As much as I like peas, I do have to say they take a lot of space to get a really worthwhile crop. That's why I grow them in 32' foot rows!

If you've another 60 plants to go in, at recommended spacings that should only take abut 5 feet of space.

No and yes.

I just chuck them straight into the soil. Way too time comsuming to plant a half decent row.
