Tomato Greenhouse
« on: May 19, 2009, 22:41 »
Hi all,

After deciding not to grow Tomato in my sq ft garden due to them taking up room i have been looking at these little Tomato Greenhouse you can get like the one here http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/invt/0273094 and wanted to know how good they and are they worth it. I do not have much room for anything else bigger due to small garden.

Many Thanks
Chris

I used to have a plastic greenhouse and grew tomatoes in it ok.  The only problem, and the small ones would be the same, was ventilation and overheating.  As long as I remembered to open the door my tomatoes did very well.
Cheese makes everything better.

Do they require a 24hr small airflow when growing in these, Maybe could cut out a small vent in them in the back

I never cut out a vent but it was vital to make sure the door was open every day when it was warm.  If you have days when you can't open it then don't get one as everything will fry.

There is always someone at home at the minute so should not be a problem.

Just looking for the cheapest one now LOL

Then go for it.  You won't believe how hot they can get.

Can you recommend any type of tomato seed to get for these due to the height of them

I would just grow the variety I liked and stop them by cutting off the growing tip when they reached the roof.

It's a bit late to be starting any off from seed so try and find some gardeners delight plants (wilkos do them fairly cheaply). The plants are fairly compact, they crop well and they taste fantastic!

Make sure you're not anywhere exposed.   I was very proud of the Argos plastic greenhouse on my allotment until it took off.

Also, the Argos one wasn't great quality - it had rusty and damaged poles that wouldn't always fit together and very weak plastic joints which buckled at the first sign of stress.  The pegs supplied weren't big enough to hold a child's play tent in place.  I've learned my lesson now - I have a mini tunnel 1m x 3m which I've tag-tied down onto a couple of pallets for stability.  Good old pallets, what would we do without them?
