Hi

I seem to be suffering with a chicken who is egg eating - I can't identify the culprit, but a few times a week I can tell that an egg has been laid and devoured.
Is there any clever way of stopping this? It doesn't appear to be thin shelled eggs, just normal ones, as sometimes find shell evidence in the nest box!

Hi

   Are you sure it is one of the hens and not jackdaws, we lost all of our eggs to jackdaws yesterday, I saw them coming out and all that was left was a few bits of shell

We have never had a problem with egg eating hens so hopefuly someone else will be able to help you on that one

You can have problems with egg eating chickens. Last year though I had a problem with Magpies taking eggs from the coop.

Thanks for your responses, it is definitely one of the chickens though, as they are completely enclosed due to murderous badgers in these parts!

   Poppies, that's how I read it anyway!
I suppose if Jackdaws have a taste for eggs, there is no reason why chooks shouldn't too, blinking annoying to be losing eggs though, and really don't want all of them to start wanting eggs for breakfast!!

You can get inserts for nest boxes so the eggs roll away from the chicken's .. err.. fundament!
I did see a link for it somewhere once but Old Timer's Disease has wiped it.  You could google some description of it.  Not expensive - about £6 each - black plastic.

You could blow an egg, fill it with some paint,  the chicken with the painted face, beak, head will be identified. Not done it myself, but met someone the other day who had!

i have one that does that an it drives me mad as they did stop it for a while , i've tried the rasied nest box system with a home made roll away along the back and only one girl laided in it  , they all perfered the deep straw on the floor .
