saved squash, marrow, courgette. pumpkin seed

I was given some  pumpkin seed many years ago ,when I grew the pumpkins [dry sweet ,crown prince,West Indian type or so I thought] they seemed a bit on the marrow side,soft wet flesh,do you think the seed cross polinated? I think this is common with the squash family,hence I don't save pumpkin or courgette seed..

I'm told they cross very easily.  And that most results of crosses are disappointing.  I haven't tried seed saving... but the book talks about keeping flowers closed except when pollinating by hand from the same variety.
