Bean and pea support netting
« on: May 09, 2009, 16:01 »
I bought some support netting as I have used bamboo canes and string in the past with the result of my peas outgrowing their supports and the canes not being strong enough to hold them and they all fell over. This time I have hammered in fencing stakes but the netting I got is in a diamond shape instead of squares which I haven't seen before and so was another lot I bought from Wilko's despite the pictures on the back showing squares. When I tried to attach it to my stakes it pulled on the bias and created a sort of "dumbell" shape in the middle instead of giving me straight edges at the top and bottom as squares would do (it's been nothing but wind and rain all day and I've just poured myself a large whisky so hope this makes sense!!).  I'm thinking of using canes to thread through the netting at the top and bottom to give me my straight edges. Wondered if anyone else has had the same problem and how did you solve it?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

stick canes in the middle too, and attach the netting so it doesn't slip back down?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you have a few extra stakes, space them between the main supports, add an upper horizontal stake to which you either tie or staple the netting. That should keep everything sturdy and upright. It might be another small investment but should last quite a few years if you bring the stakes in each winter.

Thanks for that - I spent all morning doing one row and it was so fiddly. I used two canes bound together to make a long horizontal support at the bottom and two more at the top done the same. Is there no square netting out there?

When it comes to peas, there are simpler ways than using netting, which you have to untangle at the end of the season.......

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I know where to find it - and I'm back on the home PC, not the super-slow lap top in the back of the camper!

Maybe, but you have to watch it, they may find you can't be repaired and they'll just replace you with a new one.

(Sorry for the diversion, Goosegirl!).

I'm going to try getting some reinforcing mesh that you use when constructing buildings-my neighbour is doing a milking parlour and may have some off-cuts. If not, then I will try the string thing - thanks all!
