Alternative bedding?
« on: May 12, 2009, 10:08 »
Hi all, random newbie question again, sorry!
I have been reading posts and chatting to other hen owners that I now know and everyone has said that straw is best for bedding in the laying bit of my coop and that wood shavings is best for the roosting bit.  Some have plastic or lino sheet or newspaper under the roosting bit to ease with the cleaning too.

I was just wondering, could I mix shredded paper in with the straw / shavings too?  So as to make the bedding last longer and be another step in the recycling chain?

I know that shredded paper can't be used with horses because the ink doesn't agree with them, but what about hens?

Thanks lots in advance! Chelle
