Damn spuds in compost
« on: April 01, 2007, 20:34 »
sometime last year my missus inadvertently put a load of old new potatoes in the compost bin when they went off.

I have a three bin system, stuff goes fresh into the first bin, that empties into the second, which empties into the third. Through their passage through the first bin and then through the second bin, i spent ages pulling soddin' spud shoots out and digging out the bleedin things, :x  :x  :x

now taking compost from the third bin for use on the plot, im still finding the damn things growing!

and to cap it all, as im mulching me early carrots, ive found spuds growing amungst them as well :x    :x

If you're not getting enough heat in the compost heap to kill them, you might consider putting them in the freezer overnight before composting them.  Microwave would work too but smells bad if they have any soil on.
