Sweetcorn outgrowing paper pots
« on: May 04, 2009, 11:06 »
My Sweetcorn have been going great guns (Sown on 01-Apr, put outside during the day for at least the last 14 days).

The paper pots are 5"/13CM H by 2"/5CM D

They are in a gravel tray to make it easy to pick them up etc., it has no drainage holes, but they haven't sat in water.

I picked a pot up yesterday and a mat of roots is developing underneath :(

I hadn't planned to plant them out for another couple of weeks ... but I am assuming that because they hate root disturbance I will have to? (and have fleece ready if there is a frost)

Perhaps I should make a note to sow later next year?

Mine did the same and, after advice on here, I planted them out with a fleece cover which allows me to make taller as they grow!

I planted them out 2 weeks ago, they quickly outgrew the 2ltr bottles I put over them individually so I moved to fleece.

Hi Kristen.  Last year I was too early with mine and the roots came through the bottom of the 3in pots they were in to the extent that the pots ended up an inch off the shelf and the roots were supporting the pots

I was so sure i'd kill them trying to get them out of the pots ..... but.....

.... what a success, the tastiest corn i've ever had.

What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

Actually as I pulled them apart the roots seems to "extract" OK, but I can't say it was "undisturbed"!!

I'm going to make a note that optimum time next year from Sow to Plant is 3 weeks, absolute tops is 4 weeks (this year I planted on 1st April, so 34 days / 5 weeks)

Don't forget the hardening-off week or two in your calculations!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
