About 2 months ago we had a fox attack and a month later our cockerel died leaving the 5 hens. They are now well and recovered but one of them has started to puff up her feathers quite a lot of the time. It is almost as if she were playing cockerel. It is most noticable around her head and neck where she lifts her feathers as if displaying as well as puffing out those on her body. Any ideas what is going on?

I think your first instinct is right - our top hen does it when she thinks the food is being threatened!
(ie when I won't let her have any)

she's just asserting her power.

Yes agree we have a little pekin  hen who does it to the big girls - little trouble maker

Our sussex do it when you pick them up,( not that freindly at the mo but they're getting better!) they fluff up their neck feathers LOL
