I been meaning to post this.
On Gardeners’ Question Time there was a question about putting chicken poo straight onto the garden anyway one of the answers was to put all you chippings ie all those who are lucky to have a garden big enough and have a chipper or shredder put your chippings or shredding s into your chuck run. The chippings will break down quicker because of the chicken poo and it will give the chickens something of interest. Then remove when necessary

Assuming you don't shred anything poisonous because they may not recognise it in its shredded state. Otherwise, sounds good. And would bring some worms up to have a chomp at night. :)

I've already done that and it works brilliantly. I'm very fortunate that my hubby is a tree surgeon and we have chippings ii abundance. I covered one half of my run with it. The chickens spend most of their day turning it over looking for grubs. It keeps them busy, their droppings which fall on it get mixed in and decompose quicker with no smell, along with the chippings. If you ask your local tree surgeon for chippings, they should give you them for free as it costs them to off load them in the land fill, make sure you let them know you know that and they should be only to glad to give them to you and avoid l/fill costs.

We got a shredder from a skip at the weekend and have planned to shred all our brassicas and stick them in. I think all the old boys worked out pretty quickly that if they gave us all their stalks for the girls then they didn't have to deal with them! I reckon it might be a bit pongy...Nic.
