What is the purpose of the balls?

To look pretty of course!

No, only joking.  They are to stop you poking your eye out on the stick when you bend down to weed, harvest, tie up etc.  Quite dangerous things cane and pea stick tops.

Ah, right. Very sensible.

And to hold your netting up to keep the butterflies off your cabbage :)

Now there's good thinking.....saves piddling about with up-turned flowerpots on canes.... they fall off too often.
Never keep your wish-bone where your back-bone ought to be.

and to save the netting from getting holes too
But the most important thing is not stabbing yourself with a cane, I did it last year just on top of my rib cage, and its one of the most painful things Ive ever done. If it was my eye I would definately have lost it

And pink's so purty  :D (not for Learners 92yo dad though)

Definitely safety & eyes come first.

I've had a lot of close calls with eyes on canes/sticks in the short time I've been doing this, so it must be quite a common thing.

Ooooh, just thought - if I DO get my eye stuck on a stick, that'll save on a ball  :tongue2:

ok, getting me coat.......

This makes me want to buy a small £100 shed and make the door into one you get at stables.

Why?

For a shed-ballpit. :D
