Lettuce care
« on: April 25, 2009, 19:50 »
Hi, i'm still a relative newcomer to gardening having bought a house with a decent sized garden and a greenhouse. This is my first spring where i'm more or less settled so had a go at a bit of everything this year.
One thing i've tried was a bag of mixed lettuce seeds and they seem to be doing ok but i've got no idea how to best look after them, i've heard you can cut the leaves away as and when you need them but would appreciate a bit of advice on how best to do this, also one kind of lettuce seems to be growing a bit oddly, i've addded a couple of photos with this post would someone let me know if its doing ok or needs some attendtion.

Many thanks in advance.

The second lettuce has probably been a little too warm and not had enough light.

"Cut and come again" depends on the type of lettuce. I suspect neither are this type.

Your "odd" lettuce - and indeed the other would probably benefit from being outside. They would grow slower, but make more of a crispy heart.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Top advice from DD again.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Pick/cut the outside leaves when you are harvesting them. They are the oldest ones and the new ones grow from the centre. That way you get a continual supply. Don't pick all the leaves at once though, take a few from each plant.
