The debate will no doubt rage on & on, and to be honest I cannot tell you the answer, nor do I have a personal opinion on this front.

The one thing I'm sure of though, is that I would not base fact on the result of ONE test alone, whatever was under trial.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I base my statement on over 40 years of growing potatoes quoting the TV test only has a guide as to the most recent findings.  If you plant seed spuds side by side in the same soil and treat them all the same way the yield will vary too much for any real test results even over 5 years. It takes years and years to be able to say without doubt that one is right and one way is wrong.  I can only say that over the years that I have grown potatoes chitting works for me, in good and bad soils. Every grower needs to work out what works for them.

That was not part of your original statement, you only quoted the 'one off' Monty Don trial.

I to bought my spud seeds from T&M this year. They TOOK 6 WEEKS instead of the 5 DAYS as per the cat.  I Emailed and rang them a few times expressing my concern over losing chitting time.  Each time I got a different excuse for the delay.  In the end I tried to cancel but they would not let me telling me it was too late.  I tried to explain that it was their fault that it was too late and they hung up.  I will never buy from them again.  Now my tatties including Swift are still chitting because I know it is worth the delay because I will still get a bigger crop by chitting even if so late.  Monty Don did a test and the results were ,best yield chit First and Second Earlies But not main crop. :x

Mmm, seems I wasnt the only one with customer care probs from T&M, and I will not be ordering from them again, thats for sure.

40 years growing potatoes Re Digger
Digger,You are correct But you cannot make each and every post too long and quoting a TV programme must carry more weight than a newbie like me. To quote all the sources of my statements would take up all of the available space each and every time. I had a 45rpm record of how to grow potatoes made by the late great Ted Molt who recommended chitting. Another LP by Percy Thrower, also recommending the same.  I still have Many Many Books etc etc.  Need I go on it would become so boring and unreadable that no one would bother to read it.  Short and sweet is the best. Like Munty. :D  :D  :D
