Asparagus bending over???
« on: April 22, 2009, 19:22 »
Hi all

whilst I am happy to see my asparagus coming up I am confused by the number of spears that are bending over seeming to want to head back into the ground. I have one spear that is only 4" long but is virtually doubled over like an upside down U whilst others are coming up at very odd angles. Am I being picky or is something wrong??

Appreciate any thoughts

Cheers HH
Keep digging

Some of mine do that and I've often found a bit of a nibble on the inside of the curve. Where the nibble is the spear can't grow, but the other side can, hence it bends.

Blame the slugs - or something!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

While on the subject of asparagus is it normal to have very thin spears in year one or does it mean that there is some sort of deficiency? (Gijnlim is the variety I am growing and it went in earlier this year).

They do bend in heavy soil too, just for the pressure of it.

Thin ones, yes young plants do that, also female ones, the blokes are thicker.
