I'm planning on sowing my runners outside end of may........I was quite suprised to read on the seed packet that they only need to be 6in apart (18in between rows).....I know its says this but isnt that very close?

sound right to me, my dwarf french were this close last year and they thrived, they grow in a pile and hold each other up
