To fill the gaps in my peas???
« on: April 28, 2009, 15:05 »
Unfortunatley I seem to have been unlucky with my peas, they have rather large gaps between the plants, from either no germination or the mice, so was wondering if I could

A) Move one row into the other to make up a full row
B) Put some more seeds in and hope they catch up
C) Buy some plants from the garden centre and fill gaps that way

Any of these any good?

Thanks

A) - Could do, peas transplant quite well
B) - They may not catch up, but you'd stagger the crop.
C) - BUY???
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Id fill the gaps in with new seeds
As Peagod says, this will stagger the crop and give you some nice surprises when you think they are all eaten  :D

If you go for option B), whey not germinate some in a tray, away from the nasties & transplant?

they'll also come up a bit quicker if you start them on a windowsill :)

Funnily enough Mum, thus hasnt been the case for me this year. Peas in pots were much slower than in the ground..not usual

I occasionally shorten rows by transplanting and closing up then add seeds to end of row and tell people it is succession crop and good planning. Can do it with most crops incl onion sets etc. Easy enough especially after a bit of rain and on a dull day or last thing in evening. Makes rows look fuller and me look a better gardener. OOOOOOOPs the secrets are out now

My peas are patchy too so I sowed another row a few inches away. They are coming up and will almost catch up with the earlier ones. They will grow up the same set of supports together which will save me a job.

Yes, buy wasn't a good idea! £2.99 for 6

Think I will try transplanting to make them look like one good row and run another in in a couple of weeks. I just wasn't sure if they transplant ok.

I think maybe I will steer clear of Wilkos own and get a diff supplier incase the problem was with germination.

Thanks

Unless the gaps are very wide I would leave it as it is. The plants on either side of the gaps apperciate the extra space and grow over to compensate. I my experiance seeds planted in later seldom produce worthwhile plants as they are crowded out by the original sowing.
