overwintering potatoes
« on: April 18, 2009, 20:19 »
Has anyone every overwintered potatoes?!!

For some reason I seem to have ended up doing this!  It started with me very naively planting a couple of left over seed spuds someone had given me around end of Sept/early Oct thinking I might get something for Christmas.  Yes, I know, you don't have to say it!

Well, they stayed in the unheated greenhouse in pots and at some point (perhaps last year) started adding more soil as leaves showed.  Then, about 6 weeks ago they started growing, ended up adding more soil, and now they are 20 inches or so above the soil at the top of the pots.

Bearing in mind that they were in the ground all winter, what will they taste like?  Anyone done this before?

Every gardener has what is called 'volunteer' spuds in the ground, small ones which you missed digging up last summer  and which come through the following year :D

I'm sure yours will be fine in your pots  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Other thern the will grow when they want and the temperature allows I cannot see there being much of a problem as I presume that that is how they grow in south america where they originate from.

I am not saying that they should always be left in the ground to grow as we probably have pests and diseases here that they are not equipped to handle which will build up and cause trouble eventually.

The one slight question being how much of a winter do they experience in their natural environment in S  America.

'Charlotte' is a good spud to put in towards the end of summer, to harvest around Christmas. They are supposed to be second early potatoes, but are brilliant at not letting the frost affect them

Hope this helps
