Trespassing cockerel
« on: April 12, 2009, 20:28 »
Hi all
The rooster from the allotment next door is forever in the chicken run with my ladies, every tme I go to the allotment he is in with my hens, I catch him throw him back into his pen but next thing he is back ! . I rarely see the roosters owner and when I do I ask him to clip its wings to stop it flying into my hen run, I have 8 foot high wire fencing and I have partially covered  the top of the run to try and stop the shinanigans.  I was thinking just to let him have his way, unless anyone can think a deterant other than necking it.
Cheers
Geoff
(PS Ive tried ducking him in a barrel of water )

you can get saddles for your birds to stop their feathers falling out. so maybe attach something nasty so next time he trys anything he gets a shock

It could be worse it could be a dog trying to get in at them and scaring the life of them. I have asked a neigbour severl times to keep an eye on their dog when they let it out the back because it jumps my garden fence and heads straight for the chicken pen. Everytime he apologizes but had done nothing abou it, well until a few days ago that is. :D

I heard the girls screeching and when I ran out my neighbour was just sitting out the back while his dog was in my garden trying to get at my birds. So as much as I couldn't hurt any animal I lifted my baton and headed down the garden with my neighbour sprinting past to get his dog. After giving him a telling off I said if the dog gets into the garden again it is getting the baton. Since then he has the dog on a lead everytime he is out the back with it. :D

Sorry off topic. :(

Well since the last post the rooster ( AKA jonny the lodger) has taken up residence with my hens , every time I throw him back over the fence 10 minutes later he would be back.
Just found out this afternoon that the roosters owner has given up the allotment and has culled his remaining poultry, so it looks like I am stuck with Jonny.
Only wish I knew that he was wanting  rid of the pulets as I would have bought them off him.
Geoff.

I was just about to say that if you didint want him to keep flying over, you could of clipped jonnys wing yourself. But it looks like your going to be  very busy looking after babies too
Cockerals really scare me, is he a friendly chap? Good luck with everything  :)

Hi HENrietta, well he has attacked me once but I showed him who was boss :( now when I go into the pen he gets out of the way.  I did clip one of his wings but I have never done this before but i didnt cut off enough feathers. However, I have him for keeps now.
