free turf
« on: March 27, 2009, 17:51 »
local council have been tidying up the public foot path which runs through the middle of our allotments, and left a big pile of grass turves ready for collecting at a later date. I've managed to fill a tonne (rubble) bag full, lying the turf grass to grass as advised. There wasn't much rubbish, just a few bits of glass and papers. Look forward to having some decent free top soil in a year or so. Also used odd bits to half full some tubs and galvanised tanks - to save on compost!
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

Hi Jeanieblue, sorry I didnt understand your post! (sorry) Are you saying that you are getting  the soil from the turf? What Im worried about is that you might be getting weeds and grass seeds into your plot! Im sorry if Ive miss_read? Buckstar

Good point Buckstar, but I think JB is stacking the turves in order for them to rot down into compost over the next year or so
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Ah, I didn't make it very clear, did I     I want it to rot down to use as top soil later on. Was advised to stack the turves one layer grass up, next layer grass down.  It should work in the tonne bag. Or would it be better if I stack the turves straight onto bare ground and cover?  I've got a bit of black plastic which should do the trick.

Percy Thrower suggests making a mound from turves mixed with well rotten manure, to grow stuff like cucumbers, courgettes and marrows. Am going to put some wrm in with my turf heap, soak it with water and see if I can grow courgettes on that. Will report back!
