multi tasking veg patch

i read somewhere that you can grow sweetcorn in the same patch as squashes. the sweetcorn providing the squashes with shade while they keep the moisture in at the base of the sweetcorn..... has anyone tried this?
success is the ability to go from one failure to the next with no loss of enthusiasm (winston churchill)

Throw in climbing beans and you have the "three sisters". It's something I'll be giving a go this year.

See this thread as an example http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=3277.0

i'm growing corn and squash in the same bed but the roots of corn are about  24in away
from the squash roots.. it just allows all the trailing growth somewhere to wander rather than have the bed to themselves.
Hopefully i can cut the corn, and it's stems right back, in time to harden off the skins of the squash for storage.
