ps broccoli - running out of ideas
« on: April 18, 2009, 19:39 »
i've got so much purple sprouting broccoli that i'm running out of ideas what to do with it.  i've eaten it with pasta, had it in thai curries, had it as a side dish.

does anyone have any other suggestions?

There is a recipes section of the site - see the Recipes link at the top of the page.

There is a page dedicated to broccoli here
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It is wonderful - but taste is very much an individual thing...... personally I think the long wait for it is well worth it!!  :)

I had a lovely starter in a restaurant recently - purple sprouting broccoli steamed just tender, then a bit of blue cheese sprinkled over (not too much, or you won't taste the broccoli), then crushed hazelnuts, grilled until the cheese melted.  Yummy.  I think there may have been some crumble mixture (only without sugar) in with the hazelnuts as well - hard to tell.  I'm planning to re-create it at home, possibly as a side dish rather than a starter, as soon as I get some more psb.

I made a nice open faced sandwich with our PS broccoli the other day. Boil or steam the broccoli until tender and then drain. Toast some bread and add some cheese slices then the broccoli, top with some sliced ham and then place under the grill. I put a cheesey white sauce which I added a bit of lemon zest and juice to over the top after grilling. :)

Anchovies and garlic, that's all I'm saying.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Yes.  Use them like spring greens.

If anyone's interested, I did a really simple stir-fry yesterday with spring greens - a bulb of garlic and a couple of good big bits of ginger, chopped, and fried with chilli flakes to taste, and about 400g of sliced mushrooms.  Once they were cooked dry and starting to brown, I put on some noodles, and threw in shredded greens for two (maybe 200g or a little more) and five-spice powder, and when the cabbage was just lightly cooked (it was bright green and squeaky to the teeth), added soy sauce, white wine vinegar and a little of the syrup off a jar of stem ginger (honey does well too).  By then, the noodles were ready to drain, and the whole lot got piled together into big bowls (I'd have tossed the noodles through, but the wok isn't big enough).

Not sure I'd go so far as "recipe", more "throw stuff at the pan until it seems right"!  I tend to cook like that most of the time.
