Growing under apple trees.
« on: April 19, 2009, 21:59 »
Can any one tell me what is the best fruit/vegetable to grow under apple trees?

I have two apple trees in the middle of my allotment which have a lot of growing area under and along side them, but they cause quite a bit of shade.  I am stuck to know what to grow in this area.

Any ideas gratefully received.
Happy Gardening.

Salad stuff likes a bit of shade.
Cheese makes everything better.

Apple tree roots can be quite close to the surface, and will also dry out the area under the canopy quite a lot, so you may be fairly restricted in what will actually be happy to grow and then easy to harvest without damaging the roots.

Salad could well be a good idea.  Have a headache so further inspiration is lacking a little at present, sorry  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Parsley and coriander are quite good in shade too.

My prefered crop for under my apples is stinging nettles, both as as source of material for making liquid feed, and keeping fruit thieves away - including those who think it's OK to take windfalls when I use every one to press for juice.
