Hatching chicks question.
« on: June 29, 2009, 22:43 »
Question - when I put the chick eggs into the hatcher do I need to put them on paper?
Tray is plastic with holes in it.
Know that they need paper on the floor in the brooder as it has a mesh floor, but not clear about the hatcher.
Transferring to hatcher tomorrow.
Thank you.  :)

Hi Ruby, I was looking on Ebay for something else chick related the other day and saw these mats for sale to go in the hatcher basket to help prevent spraddle legs when the chcks hatch out. Oh good idea I thought, then when I looked, they were just like those non slip matting you can get to put under plates to stop them sliding around a tray.  And I've got some of that which is also washable, so that's what I'll be using if my eggs hatch!!

But they sell paper ones too, so yes, why not use paper too?  Good luck with the hatching!

Hi Grannie
Thanks.
Yes I have some of that in my camper. Will dig it out tomorrow.
Have three out of 6 Sussex that I think are doing something.
Rejected three already, but they are not as easy as the duck eggs to candle.
Have four out of six ducks that I can see wriggling, now. Rejected two clear ones last week.
Been very busy so not posted much, but trying to read a few posts of an evening.
Will update with photos, of course ;)

I use sandpaper in my brooders for when the chicks first hatch.
