a big thank you to everyone for your comments - its a difficult one to say the least! personally I agree that if the family have always been present on the allotment and tended it together or at least regularly, then of course it wouldn't be fair to stop them continuing...also totally agree that the best people to decide if someone of the family (and not actually on the waiting list) should get the plot is the fellow allotment holders - after all they would know! (as long as they were playing fair) - my local association (council run) seems to play things a little fast and loose! ah well, patience is a virtue after all - but its so frustrating!!!
I truly appreciate all the help on advice freely given on this site, when I am lucky enough to get my plot, will certainly be plucking your brains!! for now will have to stick to the greenhouse!

Our council tenancies allow for the family to take over the plot

  Good.......  :)

I have my Dad's plot. He is 94 and I started to help him out a few years back. I now manage the plot and he sows and grows at home incredibly successfully…so in many ways he still has a very productive, satisfying and important part to play in what grows on the plot. He longs for each Spring when he can start growing things again.

After a few years of working the plot I managed to persuade the Allotment society to allow me to have the plot transferred into my name.

I did this for two main reasons… the plot has been worked by my father for 50 years since he moved south, the soil is wonderful so we did not want to lose it. Secondly my father was insisting on paying the annual fees as he received the invoice each year… and this seemed unfair to me as I had the pleasure of working the ground.

There is not a piece of land on the planet that belongs to any of us for ever (we are only caretakers) so providing we are taking good care of it we are preserving it for others in the future.... with luck.
