mountfield/brigs and stratton rotivator??
« on: March 27, 2009, 10:26 »
hi guys - have just borrowed a roti form a fried who aquired it ! no manual etc. now it started normally with lots of lovely blue smoke!  and seemed ok. however it on second use seemed to loose power and died. possible the mix fuel oil is wrong but without the instructions am a bit stuck. also the return spring for the starter ( yes i astound myself sometimes also with my technical knowledge!!!) seems to have failed as the pulley cord didnt go back in....had to stick my fingers underneath it to turn the wheel to get it to pull the cord back in.
the roti is a 3.5 super mountfield . there is also a plate which has brigs and stratton 4 cycle engine on it.anyone got a clue  about a manual or where i could get spares from??? THANK YOU!!!!

ok model details: model 92902 type 1789 01 code 79071902

you ought to be able to get spares for the engine no problem. Try your local garden machinery specialist.
If it's a mountfield M1 rotovator, there is a manual on this website. Go to the home page, and follow the links....... :)

A quick visit to the Briggs and Stratton website  http://www2.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/

...finds a representative operating manual...

 http://www2.briggsandstratton.com/pdf/owners_manual/100/270361-Domestic.pdf

...finds the parts list to suit...using your numbers

http://www2.briggsandstratton.com/pdf/illustrated_parts_list/100/MS5423.pdf

You will see many variations of some items...and you have to refer carefully to the "type" numbers to ensure you get the correct part numbers to suit your actual engine....especially if making a special order for parts.

All the best

I note you wrote of “clouds of blue smoke” and “fuel oil mixture”. As your machine is a four stroke (4 cycle) there should be no blue smoke or oil in the fuel, could this be your problem? If you have added oil to the petrol, siphon it out and refill with petrol only. Make sure the sump is full of oil, change the spark plug, and see if it starts. The recoil spring problem is often caused by grit in the mechanism and/or the spring was not properly tensioned when a new rope was fitted. If the spring tries to pull the rope back at all, it is not broken. If it is broken, fitting a new one is tricky and best left to an expert unless you are a good mechanic. Incidentally your engine was made in July 1979, any local B & S agent will be able to get spares for it.

I have returned to my previous post and realised it read better for future ref if I reversed the order of the document links...now listing the operating manual first which lists the fuel and  sump oil info'...

..and I too would add that starters are perhaps best left to a service agent....The upward pull type carries a warning moulded into the cover...but all of course have a powerful return spring lurking within...  Aside from dangers of the spring it important to get fully correct operation, rewind, length of rope etc...because otherwise this will affect starting...for instance short rope or poor returning rope will not be enough for a full pull through of an engine to provide a good start..

All the best,
