fleece on spuds
« on: March 26, 2009, 13:48 »
Does it need to be raised on hoops or something if it's only going to be on for a few weeks until frosts are passed - mine are just poking up through soil and think it's going to turn cold at weekend. Can i just drape it over loosely and weigh down edges with milk bottles & water?

Blimey Janie, you're rather early. The frosts at the end of May last year got my spuds & that's 2 months away! I've not planted any yet.

Loosely draped should hopefully do it, I can even envisage hoops being colder with all that air space, but even the slightest bit of frost will nip them, fleece cannot offer total protection.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine are in but will not come through for a couple of weeks yet.

I just throw the fleece over the top.  It is a general rule (i.e. easy to break!) that frosty nights are still so the fleece doesn't blow away when you need it.

No need to raise the fleece, just place it on top. I don't think its necessary to create a tunnel for allot veg. Mine do fine supporting the weight of the fleece which I leave on until may.
