mice and peas
« on: March 19, 2007, 17:34 »
My peas in guttering in the greenhouse were doing well till the mice found them.
Set a trap and caught one today. Very satisfying feeling.
However someone gave me a tip i'd never heard before, wondered if anyone else had tried it. That is:- mixing a bit of curry powder with the peas.
And would that work with peas sown outside as well ?
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"

A lot has been wrote about growing peas on this forum recently. Search through the threads. muntjac suggests soaking the peas in paraffin. There is also a thread about  a cheap rodent killer on here somewere, using bi carb of soda. I've just tried it and It seems to have worked. Planted a row of peas last month and they got eaten, put down bi-carb mix and then sown more peas, these have started to come up so I figure the mice must have been killed.

I've tried the paraffin method - without any success

I'm trying guttering vs direct in ground.

I think it`s just easier to get your guttering of the floor, where there is one mouse there will be more.I supposecurry/chilli could work, not outsidethuogh, one shower and it would be gone.

Pre chitting the seeds (standing them onto damp kitchen roll until they sprout) is supposed to work
