soil preparation advice
« on: March 23, 2009, 15:03 »
Hi all.
I've recently acquired a small allotment which a "neighbour" has kindly ploughed and then rotovated for me. He has advised me to wait for the next rain, break the soil up again and I'm away.
What method would you recommend for breaking up the soil?
I plan to grow potatoes, broad beans, onions, and various crops as the season goes on.
Any thoughts gratefully received.
I have clay soil.
Many thanks
Richard

Fork it over lightly, breaking up clods with the back of the fork. Then rake it. Alan Titchmarsh says bash the whole thing with the back of your fork but I'm a rebel.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I'd recommend adding as much compost as you can make and afford as you go. It'll make life easier next time.

Oh and with clay, keep doing it.  ::)

Try digging in some sharp sand  for aeration, or lime it (depending on the pH of your soil) or seaweed (if you are able to get some) as this will help bind the clay particles together so opening up the soil texture.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
