Well I have been trying to help my granparents every week with their garden it has gotten in to a bit of a state to say the least. My grandad was the gardener of the house but had a stroke a couple of years back, my nan ! well lets say she is a collector of plants and it has been gradually getting worse and now my nan has had an accident recently and damaged her arm. So I have been trying to help out every week but my god what a task  my nan is quite difficult and wont let anything be cut back or go to waste or tread anywhere to get at other things.

I think its going to take soooo long to get anywhere especially with the hording. anyway sorry to go on but has anyone got any ideas as to how to get rid of brambles they are coming up everywhere an they are driving me mad.

At some point I might be able to do my own garden

Bramble dig them out remove the main root stock and try removing as much as possible or some Round up on them might help if you dont want to dig them out.
Thanks

Send her in to make a cuppa and go at it all as quickly as you can !!  :D

My OH hates cutting anything back but things were getting out of hand so I just did what I thought was best and she's happy enough with the results.

I know I do cut things when she's not looking but she would go through the compost bins or garden waste bags then moan for the next year, my mum cut back the wrong thing 2 years ago and she still reminded me of it last week ::) but last week I brought an incinerator for her and burnt everything as I cut it so she could not check

There are ways ;)

You can definitely get rid of brambles by persistently digging out the root and never ver letting the tip of a shoot root, as this just gives you something to catch you feet it and fall over!

Good luck with your grandparents' garden -- I'm sure it will help them to have something good to enjoy again.

yeah your right I know I joke but the idea is that im hoping when ive done it my grandad will come out in the garden again as he has'nt at all in the last couple of years think it upsets him as he used to have it imaculate and spend 6-8 hrs a day out there also he wont walk round it as my nan hoards pots on all the paths and he is afraid of falling.

It will take time though its a big job!

Sounds like the same sort of thing as with my Dad, who always had the garden immaculate, despite my Mum trying to chop down everyhting in sight. Couple of years back we made a huge effort to unearth the flower beds and plant a few bright flowers and he really apprecaited it. Mum passed away last November and last week Dad went outside in the garden for the first time since then. The hellebores were out and the camellia ready to burst open, so it was like a bit of hope on the horizon.

Go for it, it'll be really loved by them both
