Radishes ready?
« on: May 17, 2013, 21:56 »
Hello
I sowed radish seed on 14 March outside on the allotment and today the seedlings suddenly seem quite large  :) I am new to this veg growing lark so how do I know when they are ready to pick?  Are they better young?

They are ready when they look like radishes!
You should be able to see the shoulders of the roots above the soil. Best picked young and fairly small otherwise they get tough and stringy.

If the roots have swollen up and look like edible radishes then they are edible radishes!

They might well get bigger, but not necessarily better.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks!  They definitely have "shoulders" so I shall rush down there in the morning and pick some for lunch  :D :D

I've had a few of mine and will be harvesting the rest today before the slugs eat any more of them

First 5 munched yesterday!   :tongue2:  Never had any luck before and I wanted some of those giant ones like they sell in the supermarket for £1 a time.  Sowed some Gigante Sardo in litter trays (a la DD) and they are lovely!  :)
