Treatment advice needed
« on: March 17, 2009, 13:26 »
Hi Guys,

Was wondering if you can help me with a scaly problem.

One of my hens started showing signs on scaly leg mite about 2 months ago. I treated all of my hens with frontline as discussed on this web site. Since then all signs of feather mite (which some of them also had) have disappeared. However, this one particular hen is looking a bit miserable - i had a good look at her 1 week ago and again today on both occasions a scale came off when touched (not pulled). One bled a little the other did not. I think the legs look worse but could this be because the mites are dead and the scales just need to come off or do you think the mites are still active? What else should i do with her to manage this problem? Should she be in a pen on her own?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi BD

I'd smother the legs with vaseline just incase any of the mites are still alive and re check her for any mites, lice round her vent just to make sure there are no blood suckers making her feel down :)

Agree with Vember, did you use Frontline drops? Maybe another course will make sure they have all gone

After apply vaseline, brush the scales with a small soft tooth brush.  This can loosen any dead scales etc.  Keep applying the vaseline as it suffocates any mites left.  There isn't a fantastic blood supply to the scales so the frontline might not have got to them.

From what I can gather the mites take 2 weeks to grow from egg being laid to mite to then start the cycle again
So I presume it's best to do it for 2 weeks at least ???

Think I would reapply nightly, or at least check nightly to be sure there is still a good covering.
