Water in crop??
« on: March 17, 2009, 17:57 »
Hi guys,

Poor little Violet...she started laying a short while back and immediately started to peck the other girls feathers. Now she'd started to look like she was 'coughing' but with no sound (If that makes sense?) and she's not laid the last few days. I picked her up and her crop seemed enlarged and after a quick feel it felt like water. So, I tilted her upside down, head down, and gently massaged the crop. Sure enough a lot of water came out!! I repeated this a few times and she actually looked relieved!!

Any ideas??

Cheers

Mick

She may have feathers stuck in her crop.  They do eat them for extra protein sometimes.

If the condition doesn't clear up in a couple of days you may have to get the vet to remove them.

Thanks AuntSally,

Just searching through old posts, could be sour crop? The water coming back up was smelly! Think I'll feed her her live yoghurt and then see how she goes?

I've heard folks talking about feeding cat food for added protein? Is this recomended, if so what 'kind' of cat food? dry? tinned? fish? dunno...

It could be sour crop and may respond to live yogurt.

If she's got a blockage it will need removing though and if the infection is more that light she will need an antifungal treatment from the vet.

So if you follow the treatment HERE  and she get's no better in a couple of days time you should get some professional treatment.
