Raised Bed in a Green House or keep with pots?
« on: March 05, 2009, 21:15 »
My pots I  used  last year where a little too small for tomatoes, so this year I am thinking of building a raised bed in my green house rather then buying pots that are large enough for maximum yield.

Any reasons why this is not a good idea?

Any advantages or disadvantaged of a raised bed over pots?

Thanks

Personally I wouldn't bother with raised beds in a greenhouse.  I use B&Q buckets, 98p each or flower buckets, free from the local florist.

somewhere between a raised bed and a pot would be a trough. Easily constructed out of timber and any size possible.

A larger container than a pot has the distinct advantage of not drying out so fast - unless you are around and able to water twice a day.
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Also, if you get a pest/disease attack, it's easier to empty a tub/trough of compost than to dig out and replace the contents of a bed. The bigger the better though.

Using a raised bed you would need to change the soil at the end of each season to avoid a build up of pests and ills. I would go with large pots and decent compost which can be recycled oiutside at the end of the season.

Ring culture uses slightly smaller diameter bottomless pots. Lots of people use this method in the greenhouse.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
