Three sisters and peas
« on: March 10, 2009, 03:42 »
Hi, last year we tried the three sisteers method with sweetcorn, beans and squash. As we are new to veggie gardening and was amazed at how successful it was. In fact we had too many beans (freezer full of them)  :D

I was wondering if I could substitute some of the bean plants this year with peas?

If so would you choose certain mounds that only had peas and others that had only beans, or would you mix the beans and peas on each mound?

Thanks in advance
Louisa

You'd want a climbing pea (either 'Alderman', or the climbing mangetout whose name escapes me), I think.  Also, peas are less appreciative of really hot, sunny spots than runners, but it's probably worth a try.  You could also try climbing French beans, and think about letting some go over for haricot (heck, if you plant a white-seeded runner you could get butter-beans - 'Czar' is meant to be tasty for that).

Thanks Stripey cat, last year it was a french bean that I used as I am not a massive fan of runner beans, and as I mentioned, it worked really well before!!!

I could always plant them on the north side of each of corn mound to prevent them from getting too much sun. Like you say, worth a try. If it doesn't work, then won't try it again!!!
