No eggs
« on: March 03, 2009, 12:42 »
Last summer someone gave me a Black Rock hen and said it was from the previous year.
I've had her now since mid September.  Since she's been here she has laid 3 eggs!
She's healthy, eats well, has nice shiny feathers and her droppings are normal.  She lives with another Black Rock and a Sussex Star, each of which lay me an egg every single day, even on the coldest days.
Anyone got any answers why a hen wouldn't be laying?
I'm going to get 3 more hens tomorrow (2 Black Rocks and another Sussex Star) because
of the demand for the marvellous free range organic eggs.

Are you sure she is not laying her eggs when one of the others has a day off?  Hens usually lay, on average, 5 eggs per week.

It could just be that the black rock  -if she is a couple years old (maybe more?) has just stopped over winter and may be rather slow to get started. Also being a first generation hybrid probably  has been laying like mad her last 2 seasons and wont lay too much now. Saying that I imagine she will lay noticeably more in Spring/Summer anyway.

Older hybrids do most of their laying in their first 2 years, which is why a lot of farmers get rid of hybrids cheap at this age, same as ex bats really. :)

No, I see the other 2 hens laying in the nests.  They always lay at approximately the same time, which is convenient for me cos I know when to catch them in the nest and collect immediately after. The few eggs she has laid since I've had her have been bigger eggs than the other two hens, and they've had double yolks.
