I got a greenhouse yesterday!
« on: March 07, 2009, 09:07 »
I thought I would share this with you guys as nobody else seems to understand my excitement!
Its a 6x8 and polycarb as its in the garden and I have small kids.

Nice staging and an automatic vent and some slabs and some soil in the bottom for flexibility.

I have just germinated cucumbers and tomatoes on my kitchen windowsill, when can I put them in the greenhouse? Not necessarily planted out, they could stay in pots for now. Is it still too cold?

I'm so new to this, grew lots of stuff last year in a raised bed, just flung it in and crossed my fingers and it all worked (except the spinach for some reason) so I want to do it properly this year!

Any suggestions?

I absoluely understand your excitement, it's a great feeling isn't it? Got my 6x8 from a neighbour for £50 and I thought I'd won the lottery.

I wouldn't put cucumbers and toms out there until you can guarantee to be frost free.  Is there an unheated room you could put them in?

At the moment I have early broad beans, peas, cabbages, cauliflower, leeks, Kale and carrots.  If there is a hint of frost I cover them in bubble wrap.  You can double glaze the greenhouse with the stuff too.

Happy growing.
Cheese makes everything better.

Ooh yes I'm excited for you! I couldn't understand, when I emptied my compost bin of 'finished' compost and spread it on my beds for the very first time, why nobody was as excited as me! :D

I can understand your excitement, definitely.  I have a new shed - it is three weeks old today and I am as proud as a new parent!
I get my kicks on Plot 66!

I just made some of the famous Richy's paper pots and planted some early peas. Ran out of pots though so the beans will have to wait till tomorrow.
Also sowed 2 flat trays with salad leaves, there are 6 modules in it so I'll try a successive thang!

Don't know what to do with the ground now. Soil is terrible quality, half sand, half stones and half big huge lumps of concrete! Can't afford to do slabs at the moment so any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Flatten it down, pin down weed suppressant membrane and apply some cheap gravel.  Grow in pots stood in trays from a garden centre.  Well that's what I do.
