blood covered egg advice please
« on: February 10, 2009, 14:03 »
Just been out to check on the girlies roaming around the garden.
In the coup was a egg covered in blood .  I knew it was one of the batts because of where it was laid.  I hazarded a guess at Morning or( purple as I seem to call her! I may as well just spray the whole spray on her)

I tipped her up to check if she had blood on her bottom an low and behold.......Where the egg comes out, it looks ruptured as if the egg was too big and tore her.  It was only a small egg so I really can't see why there would be a problem?????   What do I do????   Leave her and hope it gets better????  She really is a state this one!!!   Bloomin batts!!!!!

Hopefully it was just a one off - is there any tissue protruding from her vent?
Was the egg shell normal? ie nice hard shell or was it a bit soft? Is she growing feathers at the mo?

Ouch

Just a suggestion. DOn't know if it's suitable but I'd be tempted to put some purple spray or even germolene round her vent.

Wait for more experienced advice though.

keep a real close eye on her - if the egg had an unpleasant odour could  be there is an infection somewhere, maybe in her reproductive tract. Can you tell if she has been laying regulary? Does  her abdomen feel normal, warm (or squishy?) you could compare with with of  the other exbats.
I would be tempted to isolate her for 24 hours -just for observation. To keep an eye on her egg laying, feeding and droppings.
The first month is stressful for exbats, the move, transport, enviroment and the effort of growing feathers can take it out of them.
