strange question!
« on: February 07, 2009, 16:26 »
Hi everyone.

I am planning on keeping chickens on my double allotment. One lot of birds for eggs and the other for meat. I was wondering once you kill and bleed the chicken what is the best way to dispose of the blood? I was told to bury it but am worried that this may attract foxes. Thanks for any help at all!

I don't know that much about killing yet (the day will come, mmmm....) however I would let blood go into a bucket and then down the drain or toilet. Not much help if you chickens are not at your home but it may be better than blood on the lottie.

Welcome to the forums. :)
How are you intending to despatch them?
I presume you are capable of doing the deed?

I would strongly advise you don't get the 'supermarket' breed for meat, they are shockingly prone to leg problems.
Have you considered traditional dual purpose breeds?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

No need to bleed a chicken and just how much blood do you think you're going to get fom one anyay ? The answer is very very little.

Very little blood in a chicken ! but what there is is very very good for garden. Stick it in the compost heap - if you're worried about critters bury it down a bit, I put all sorts of dead things in my heap and only our cats ever try to dig them up again - they call it reclaiming their righful property :D
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.

Actually if you use the hatchet method, there's quite enough to make a very messy patch on your lawn!

I was really surprised how much,  but it's probably a case of a little goes a long way. I would think it was about 1/4 pint, not more.

I read that sussex are a good dual purpose but i'm still researching as yet.
Think i'm capable, not 100%sure on method yet. Hoping to get hold of a local keeper to show me how to do it right.

Hi hic
In me, you are talking to a very recent but absolute convert to Light Sussex chickens. Mine have laid very well, are docile and look marvellous scratching around in the fields. If you decide to keep Sussex, I don't think that you'll be disappointed. :)
