Blown brassicas
« on: January 27, 2009, 18:25 »
Both my savoys and brussels have blown this year has anyone any suggestions - they were grown in pots of peat free compost and planted out. My site is sandy and slopes. No manure was used , although I applied a mulch of compost, fertilizer and a handful of lime.

Hi Mick , I think that the problem was caused by the soil not being firm enough. brasicas need firm soil.

I agree,  dont plant soon after digging or forking to let the ground settle and firm up. If you dont want to walk on your planting section then Id leave them at least a month to let it firm

Thanks for your responses - I have been developing  a bed system so with the mulch I have been applying this will have kept the soil open - I will try firming the soil this year to see if this helps.

You don't need to tread on the soil as long as you firm down the soil around the plant with your knuckles. You should be able to tear the leaf off a young plant when you pull it straight after planting, rather than uproot it - then you know it's firm enough.

I'm with DD, I tread my brasica beds. Seems to work, no blowing here. Just slugs and clubroot...
