Revitalised plot!
« on: December 29, 2008, 17:19 »
Hello,

over the last 18 months Ive been undertaking extensive building works, which meant she who must be obeyed took over the use of the vegetable plot as a sanctury for a very wide variety of garden plants which were in they way of the house extension. All have been covered with several layers of fleece since October.

As soon as the last of the frosts are over with I will be regaining my kingdom and all the plants will be removed.
The soil was in very good condition when I relinquished control of my domain and I would like some advice as to what, if anything may be lurking in the soil which may have an adverse effect on vegtable growth and, should I follow previous years crop rotation or treat it all as a new start?
Regards, NN.

Hi NN, welcome to the site, you might want to pop into the Welcome forums and introduce yourself fully there (but be warned for requests for piccies and demands that you have chicken   )

I wouldn't worry too much about rotation issues, it'll be 2 seasons since you grew anything veggie-wise, and it's really repeated non-rotation which causes issues.

I'd probably consider whether previous plants were members of the brassica or pea families, but I'd have thought this to be relatively unlikely, so just go ahead and start from fresh  IMHO :)

Some well-rotted manure or other soil fertiliser won't do any harm tho' (except for manure where carrots or parsnips are going)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
