being a pallet builder of some experiance   i can offer this advice . dont knock them apart when they are dry .try to leave them to soak in the rain a while then do them the next day ,,,, makes it a damn site easier to pry them apart . as for the tools for splitting them use a light crow bar and lump hammer and also a claw hammer, knock the claw part of the crowbar down between the blocks and the planks as far as possible then pry them apart. and get a good pair of pincer pliers  these are useful when the nails snap .. also a great tool for doing this job is a roofing tile pry bar , when removing bad nails that bend easy , snip them off halfway down the shank with the pliers and they will be easier to knock through and then use the claw hamer to remove them . when your doing this job try to stand the pallets on thier longest side . ( with the planks facing you horizontally)
still alive /............
