Info on cherry trees.
« on: December 19, 2008, 10:20 »
Am thinking of getting a cherry tree from Homebase, £9.99, one is a Morello, cannot remember what other variety is.  They are grafted I think but no details on root-stock, label says 3mx3m in 5 years. My question is, would it work in a large pot, if not what is the final size likely to be if I put it in the garden.
Second question, also at Homebase they are selling off strawberry gro-bags, 98p each for a 50L size. Would they be okay for filling a raised bed, if so, should I mix anything with it as I fill,
thanks for any help,Bob.

The pot would have to be very large to accomodate a fruit tree as the pot would need very regular watering and feeding. A 3 M high tree is no small plant and I'd recommend you find a nice ground spot for it.

Don't wish to put you off but morello's are a sour cherry. Assuming that the other is a sweet cherry then be aware that birds LOVE cherries. I have a nice sized tree of Sunburst. Very nice cherries and a decent crop. But I cannot recall the last year that I ate one.

The blackbirds and starlings eat every one before I get a chance. The tree is about 3x3m but is too big to net. Seriously debating cutting it down then getting the trunk+root out and trying something else. :(

So if you envisage a good crop of cherries then please be aware that you may not be the one eating them.
