Hot bed from old fridge
« on: December 01, 2008, 14:18 »
Hi all

I want to construct a hot bed and thought I'd use old doors, but I can't find enough. So then I was looking at smokers from old fridges and thought an old fridge might do the trich given it is also nicely insulated.

But I'm not sure what the difficulties or dangers of getting the old workings off the back are, anyone have any ideas ?

My idea is to remove the doors, lie it on its back and fill with hot manure then  soil/compost

I was thinking I'd need drainage holes but maybe not as I'll have a glass lid on it so it should not get drowned, but what does anyone else think ?

if your taking all the gubbings out your have to get the cfc gas taken out by a professional and disposed of legaly

Yes I know the cfc restriction, although I doubt there is much left as the fridge in question has been a feed store for a very very long time

be careful because some fridges use ammonia gas as the refrigerant, which is toxic and very very smelly if you get a face full.

Others use hydrocarbons such as butane and so are flammable. the lable on the rear of the fridge should give you a clue as to what the contents are.

Hi Faz

I think the one I have in mind was manufactured in the cfc days

But the problems with the new gases are worth bearing in mind for the future Thanks

Hi

I'm trying the dishwasher first I think for one thing it is a bit smaller so easier to carry uo, but I'll bear that in mind actually thinking about it I might as well try the fridge where it is too
